Resident Spotlight — David

David
A Life of Service and Camaraderie

David grew up in Keene, New Hampshire, playing football and working odd jobs. He graduated from high school in 1967, a time when the Vietnam War was escalating.

“I called a Navy recruiter and somehow the topic of submarines came up,” recalls David. “He said, just sign this paper. So, I did. And that started my 30-plus-year Navy career.”

David started as a Dishwasher, then a Sonar Technician, working his way up to a Master Chief Petty Officer. His skill as a Sonar Technician – listening for the different sounds, like a propeller cavitating, to identify incoming ships or submarines in the area.

“Sometimes you could hear the bubbles breaking up in the water and you knew something was out there,” he said.

While David still proudly wears his Navy hat, he’s retired and fills his days with the various activities and social events at Bowman Place. He’s happily called the full-service senior living facility home for about a year.

“For Valentine’s Day everyone was out on the dance floor. Bowman Place really goes all out for the holidays.”

In addition to cutting a rug when the moment strikes him, David also is an active member of the Men’s Club, attending regular Monday meetings that kindle friendly debates and spirited conversations. He also wouldn’t miss Walking Club which meets at 10 a.m. every day clocking in about a mile.

But when asked about his favorite activity – hands-down it’s Happy Hour. Four times a week at 4 p.m., residents gather together to socialize with a cocktail, or two, of choice.

“Everyone gets together, laughs,” he recalls with a smile. “There’s a real sense of camaraderie here. And luckily more space than the tight quarters of a submarine!”

When asked what he looks forward to, it’s living life to the fullest. Cheers to that, David.
